ToAS: To the World, FoolishnessThe Tales of Alyosha Strannik:
"To the World, Foolishness"
I shot out of bed and shrieked--an alarm cry as loud and as high-pitched as a microphone feeding back--at the sound of an unknown voice in my quarters. It wasn't a voice over the specially-configured comm unit I slept with around my wrist, meant to reach between phases if I was needed. Nor was there the sound of the assistive equipment typically needed to bring anyone else I knew into my native phase.
I slapped the comm as I telekinetically righted myself to face the source of the voice. "Computer--intruder alert, captain's quarters, +.004 phase!"
No response. Was the wristcomm malfunctioning? The receiver on the other end? I didn't know. It didn't matter.
There was another Devidian aboard the Chin'toka. Again.
My finger jabbed in his direction like a knife. "Get the hell away from my people!" I shouted--unheard by anyone else, and unheeded by

"The Least of the Pain"
Very soon, the Chin'toka will re-enter service following the Deep Space Eleven incident, and I will have the unfortunate task of...well,' rallying the spirits of my crew' feels like an inappropriate description. Disrepsectful of the heavy reality of the grief we share at our losses, and those aboard the Indomitable and DS11. We have a counselor on board, yes, but I as captain bear the obligation too, to serve as a focal point for their healing, at a time when I am not whole either.
It's not that I haven't experienced dark times before. My career began in the Dominion War; I was used by Starfleet to carry critical information and carry out exfiltration missions. And then there was the Cardassian tour aboard the Avandar in 2405.
We had all heard about the disappearance of 75 of the Cardassians' mothballed ships. And the terrorist strikes on Cardassia and its worlds, suspected

"Going Through the Motions"
There are 47 ships of varying classes and sizes docked inside and immediately outside Earth Spacedock. I know not just from reviewing the Chin'toka's scans, but I've had time to scrutinize them all through the windows as I wait for the Board of Inquiry to hand down its final ruling on the loss of the USS Indomitable. It's scheduled for this afternoon--but until then there's nothing I can do but wait here on ESD.
One of those ships is the USS Akellen Macet, commanded by Vice Admiral Tayben Berat, the 77th Fleet's second-in-command under Admiral ch'Harrell. The Macet is one of the few, if not the only Federation starship named after a member of a foreign military--and even more unusual given that the Cardassians are sometimes known to bestow such an honor while the honoree still lives.
The gold-ochre-copper patterns emblazoned across the Vesta-class starship's hull are e

"We're two days out from Deep Space 11 at Warp 9.5," Captain Sengupta was saying in even British tones as devoid of accent as the American accent I had been taught. "We do not expect you to engage the Tal Shiar alone, however." Sengupta turned to his helmsman to issue a command. "Lay in a course for Deep Space 11.
"We will see you presently. Sengupta out."
He turned again the instant before the channel went dead. "Engage slipstream."
Oh my Lord, he hasn't been cleared!
"Nyet!" Horror animated my human features; the tension throughout my body and the preparatory boost to my telekinetic cortex, however, was quite real. "Do not engage superwarp--repeat, do not--"
Sadness rolled like a wave from my first officer--a deliberate telepathic push. "They've already gone to slipstream, sir. Their intention seems to have
